The rescue took place on Sunday 4 January

A dog had to be rescued after it went over a coastal cliff in a seaside town.

The dog was found on a ledge partway down the cliff near Cuckmere Cottages in Seaford, East Sussex, on Sunday, the Coastguard said.

They used their rescue equipment to send a technician down to pick it up, and the dog was reunited with its owners within eight minutes, they added.

In a Facebook post, HM Coastguard Newhaven said: "The owners had done exactly the right thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard."

The coastguard advises people to always call their dog from a safe place rather than attempt their own rescue, and dial 999 in an emergency

In their advice to dog owners, HM Coastguard says "many dogs die each year after running over cliff edges".

They advise keeping dogs on leads when walking along the coast.
