The new roundabout would replace a junction on the A9 near Tomich

A road junction in Easter Ross that has been the scene of accidents over the years could be replaced by a new roundabout.

Highland Council has proposed building the four-arm roundabout at the site of the A9's Tomich junction, near Invergordon.

Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport (ICFGF) would fund the project using some of the support it has received from the UK government.

Accidents at the junction have included an incident in January which saw two people seriously injured.

The ICFGF, which was signed off in September, includes developments in and around Invergordon.

The roundabout on the Inverness to Thurso stretch of the A9 forms part of proposed improvements and changes to infrastructure in the area.

The freeport plans to use about £2m from £25m it has received from the UK government to fund the construction work.

ICFGF chief executive Calum MacPherson said the roundabout was needed due to the likelihood of increased traffic to the port.

He said: "We are pleased to support Highland Council on the proposed improvements to a section of the A9 that has been the subject of road safety concerns in the local community and beyond for many years.

"The creation of a new roundabout will remove the current staggered junction, helping to improve safety and traffic flow on this busy road."
