Firefighters have been unable to determine the cause of a blaze at a primary school on the first day of the Easter holiday.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was called to Brooklands Primary School in Brantham at 13:09 BST on 30 March.

Upon arrival, crews from Ipswich East, Ipswich Princes Street and Hadleigh, and three from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, found the building's roof was alight.

After extinguishing the fire, investigators worked to establish how it had started and the service has now told the BBC that the cause will be recorded as "undetermined".

The fire services were first alerted to the blaze, which police officers and paramedics also attended, after members of the public reported seeing smoke from up to three miles (4.8km) away.

Once at the scene, it was established that the fire had spread inside the building, and firefighters had to use breathing apparatus and three hose-reel jets to put it out. The fire service called a halt at 14:27.

The extent of the damage to the school and when it might reopen after the Easter holiday remains unknown.

The Orwell Multi Academy Trust, which runs the site, was contacted for comment.
