A number of homes have been evacuated after a "suspicious item" was found during the arrest of a terror suspect.

A 21-year-old man was detained on suspicion of attempting to join the Islamic State group, also known as Daesh, in the Horfield area of Bristol on Tuesday. He remains in police custody.

Avon and Somerset Police said the suspicious item was found during a search of a residential property in Francombe Grove and a cordon had been put in place while the object was assessed.

Close neighbours have been asked to leave their properties as a precaution, the force added.

'Pre-planned operation'

The arrest was made following an investigation by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE), who were supported by Avon and Somerset Police and the West's own counter terror unit.

Ch Insp Keith Smith, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: "We appreciate arrests of this nature can cause concern in the local community, but we'd like to reassure everybody this was part of a pre-planned operation by our colleagues at CTPSE."

He said he appreciated the local community's understanding while police activity takes place and urged anyone with concerns or information to speak to officers.

Those in the Horfield area of Bristol are told to expect an increased police presence will the investigation continues.
