A fire has broken out at the Nissan Technical Centre on Cranfield University Technology Park.

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said "multiple appliances" attended a commercial building fire at the site.

Witnesses reported seeing a large cloud of smoke, with the fire service advising people to avoid the area and keep their windows and doors closed.

A Nissan spokesperson said: "All employees that were on site were safely evacuated and we will work with the fire service to understand the cause of the incident."

Nissan Technical Centre Europe is one of the company's development centres where vehicle testing and engineering is carried out.

The number of firefighters dealing with the blaze had been reduced by 20:00 GMT but crews remained at the site overnight.
