Plans to spend £19m on replacing a leisure centre in Kent have been revealed.

Tonbridge's new Angel Centre is set to include a gym, spin studio, sports hall, café, soft play area with party space and a wellbeing suite.

If plans are approved, councillor Adem Mehmet said building work could begin in late autumn.

He told BBC Radio Kent the project was needed because the existing building was reaching the end of its operational life.

The new facility, currently earmarked for the Sovereign Way Mid car park, could be completed by 2028, according to Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council (TMBC).

The current Angel Centre, which is more than 40 years old, will stay open until the new building is completed.

It will then be demolished, said TMBC.

"I'm really excited about the new plans," said Sarah Halstead from Tonbridge.

"I go to classes here and like the look of the new facilities."

She told BBC Radio Kent she had been using the existing Angel Centre for 34 years.

An exhibition detailing the plans, including computer-generated images and architectural plans, will run at the current site until 22 February.

TMBC said the community could give feedback on their views at the event.

The new facility is part of a wider local authority plan to enhance Tonbridge town centre, which aims to create a "vibrant, sustainable and inclusive urban environment along the River Medway," it added.
