A zoo said it had welcomed its first newborn chimpanzee in almost 17 years.

Colchester Zoo said its new arrival was born in the early hours of Saturday morning to Napoleon and first-time mum Kora.

All three apes were doing well, the zoo said.

It asked visitors to be quiet around the chimpanzee enclosure "to allow the new family time to settle".

Kora was born at the Essex attraction in November 1999, and Napoleon was moved there from a zoo in Fuengirola, Spain, last year.

The zoo said he was introduced to its three female chimpanzees a few weeks after his arrival in April.

The new arrival's name and sex have not yet been confirmed.

In 2018, the chimpanzee enclosure was redeveloped at a cost of £2m.
