McDonald's to sort one-star rating 'with urgency'

McDonald's has said it will address a one-star rating given to one of its restaurants with "the utmost importance and urgency".

Inspectors found improvements "needed to be made immediately on hygienic food handling including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage" at a McDonald's outlet in Dalton Road, Barrow-in Furness.

Inspectors also said there were issues with pest control, hand-washing facilities and ventilation.

A spokesperson from McDonald's said the fast food chain was "addressing the matters identified by the environmental health officer (EHO) with the utmost importance and urgency".

According to the government's food rating website, the inspection took place on 26 September.

Westmorland and Furness Council inspectors found problems with the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and the building.

The inspection found that "major improvement was necessary" in the management of food safety.

In England, businesses are not legally required to display their hygiene rating although it is highly encouraged.

A spokesperson for McDonald's told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "This rating does not reflect the high standards of hygiene and cleanliness that this restaurant strives to uphold.

"We will be requesting a revisit at the EHO's earliest convenience so that the rating can be reassessed."

There is another McDonald's restaurant in Barrow, at Unit M Hollywood Park in Hindpool Road, which has a 5* food hygiene rating.
