A North Yorkshire school has applied for permission to build a two-storey Edwardian-style sports pavilion on its grounds.

Scarborough College hopes to build the pavilion next to its Grade II listed main school building as part of a proposal to upgrade facilities.

The site, which was purpose-built as a school at the end of the 19th Century, caters for boarding and day pupils from ages three to 18.

Two sheds, which are currently on the site of the proposed sports pavilion, have also been proposed for demolition.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), the planning proposal said: "Particularly due to international and regional boarding pupils, the school generates income from outside the area.

"The success of the school is reflected by the fact the school is currently running at full capacity."

'Evoke spirit'

If the plans are approved, the sheds would be replaced by a new two-storey block with a footprint of 4,650 sq ft (432 sq m).

The first floor of the sports pavilion would be 4,165 sq ft (387 sq m) and the new building's total proposed area would be 8,815 sq ft (819 sq m).

The proposal states: "The college is in a conservation area with many fine Edwardian buildings in the vicinity.

"It is intended that the massing, detailing and choice of materials will be similar to an Edwardian sports pavilion."

It adds: "The proposed building will be clad in brickwork at ground floor level to match the existing college and weatherboarding above ground floor to evoke the spirit of an early 20th Century cricket pavilion."

North Yorkshire Council has not set a date for deciding on the application, which is currently open to representations.
