A historic community hall in Nuneaton could be restored and brought back into use.

Plans to redevelop the Co-operative Hall in Abbey Street have been put forward by not-for-profit youth charity Aspire in Arts, as part of its wider cultural and community programme.

The project would see the former hall area refurbished, while creating a venue for performances, community events, creative training and youth activities.

As part of the early development work, Aspire is inviting local residents to share their memories of the hall.

The charity said it is currently working with heritage specialists and architects to develop proposals and explore funding opportunities, including a potential application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council said it will support the project, subject to external funding being secured and formal agreements being completed, but no final decisions have been made.

Councillor Nicky King, Portfolio Holder for Business Regeneration, said restoring the hall will create a new home for younger people in the borough.

She said: "This building has a significant and longstanding history in Nuneaton town centre, and I'm sure residents will be delighted to hear that plans are being explored to bring the hall back into community use.

"While previous generations will hold many fond memories of time spent here, it would create a new home for younger people in the borough to make memories of their own.

"This is another example of how we are preparing for the future while respecting our heritage."

Calls for pictures and memorabilia

Aspire are asking people with memories of the old hall or former ballroom to come forward.

It said pictures, memories, posters or memorabilia from past events, alongside stories about the Co-operative building and its role in the community, could form part of a future exhibition.

Amina Bhagatte-Mamoojee, CEO of Aspire in Arts, said the charity is now exploring the feasibility of proposals and preparing funding applications.

She added: "We are excited to explore the potential of bringing this historic space back into use for the community.

"The Co-operative Hall has an important place in the town's history, and we want to ensure that its future reflects that heritage, while creating opportunities for arts, culture and young people in Nuneaton."
