The road heading into Kendal was closed for several hours on Thursday

A driver died when their car left the road and struck a tree, police have said.

Cumbria Police were called to the A591 south of Kendal at about 13:10 GMT on Thursday to reports of a crash involving a Mercedes car.

Officers said no other vehicles were involved and asked people who saw the crash or the moments leading up to it to get in touch.

The road between Brettagh Holt and Prizet was closed in both directions for several hours.
