A new state-of-the-art skatepark is among a major upgrade of facilities which have been unveiled in a park by an airport.

Hundreds of residents and organisations came together to celebrate the transformation of Wigmore Valley Park next to London Luton Airport.

Young skateboarder Kiersten Gaughan, who had campaigned for the facility, had the honour of skating through the ribbon on Saturday.

The park project, which also includes a children's play area, has been delivered by Luton Rising — the Luton Council company which owns the airport.

In April 2025, the government approved expansion plans for the airport, which means annual passenger numbers could almost double to 32 million by 2043.

The skatepark is next to a proposed second terminal and forms part of a new development area including new parkland and open space.

Luton Rising's managing director Nick Platts said the improvements to Wigmore Valley Park had been shaped by extensive community engagement.

"By prioritising accessibility, sustainability and community needs, we have created a high-quality public space for everyone to use and enjoy," he said.

"This is a project we are extremely proud of, reflecting Luton Rising's ongoing commitment to delivering lasting, positive outcomes for our local community and residents."

Javeria Hussain, vice-chairwoman of Luton Rising, said it was "wonderful to see so many residents come together to celebrate the new and improved park facilities"

The improvements also bring a range of new amenities to the park, including public toilets, additional bench seating and the introduction of public wi-fi.

Upgrades also include further enhanced accessibility with step-free routes and wider paths.

The access road and car parks have been resurfaced and five new designated accessible parking bays have been added.
