North Yorkshire Police will be investigated as the victim has prior contact with them

North Yorkshire Police has referred itself to the police watchdog following the alleged attempted murder of a woman in York.

The victim, in her 20s, was found seriously injured after being stabbed at a property in Lindley Road on Saturday.

Jake Joe Bamber, 35, was later charged with attempted murder and possession of a knife in a public place in connection with the incident.

North Yorkshire Police said it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as there had been "prior police contact with individuals connected to such investigations".

A force spokesperson said: "In line with standard practice for all forces when there has been prior police contact with individuals connected to such investigations, North Yorkshire Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct to examine the full circumstances leading up to the incident."

Bamber, of Apollo Street, York, appeared at York Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where he was remanded in custody ahead to appear at Leeds Crown Court on 11 February.

Police said the victim remained in hospital, where she was currently in a "serious but stable" condition following emergency treatment.
