A main road into a Staffordshire town is set to be closed for five days for resurfacing and drainage repair work.

Highways crews will be working on the eastbound side of the A5190 Lichfield Road, Cannock, between Devon Road and Eastern Way, from Monday.

The road closure is needed for the £115,000 project to be done quickly and safely, said Staffordshire County Council, which described it as essential improvement work that would take about five days to complete, weather permitting.

A diversion route would be clearly signed, and local residents and emergency services would still be able to gain access, it added.

"We hope to have this work done as quickly as possible, but obviously this is a main route into Cannock so some disruption is expected," Daniel Cecil, the council's cabinet support member for highways said.

Highways crews are set to work overnight on 15 January between 19:00 and 06:00 GMT to complete the resurfacing work.

Drains would be cleaned and repaired during the road closure, damaged kerbs replaced where necessary, and road markings repainted, added the council.
