Pipe bomb found under Audi car, court told

Officers carried out controlled explosions and homes were evacuated after a pipe bomb was found underneath a car, a court heard.

Police were called to Cowley Hill in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, at 12:15 BST on 16 August after the suspicious device was discovered.

Robert Kovacs appeared at St Albans Magistrates' Court charged with attempted murder in relation to the incident.

The 38-year-old, of Tenby Road, Edgware, north-west London, was remanded in custody to appear at St Albans Crown Court on 7 October.

A prosecution lawyer told magistrates a device was seen under an Audi during the incident.

Mr Kovacs is also charged with making an explosive substance with intent to endanger life, and doing an act with intent to cause an explosion.

He appeared via video link from prison and did not enter any pleas to any charges.

Police have said a 38-year-old woman from Borehamwood was also arrested in connection with the incident and is on bail
