Police said a section of Carter Lane had been temporarily closed

A suspicious package that led to a police cordon being put in place in Mansfield is believed to have been a battery pack, police have said.

Several homes were temporarily evacuated and a bomb disposal unit was called after the item was discovered in Carter Lane at about 18:15 on Monday.

Nottinghamshire Police said a controlled explosion was carried out by the British Army's Explosive Ordinance Division and it was determined the package "posed no threat".

The force said an investigation was still ongoing and asked for anyone with information to get in touch.

Residents in Argyle Street, Mill Street, Carter Lane, Reindeer Street and Beresford Street were asked to leave the area as a precaution but have since been told they can return to their homes.

Police said road closures in the area were also being lifted but it could take some time for traffic to clear.

Ch Insp Iain Blackstock said: "I'd like to thank members of the public for their patience while the necessary investigation work was carried out and this incident was brought to a safe conclusion."

In a statement posted on Facebook, Mansfield District Council added: "We'd like to thank the emergency services for their quick response and to residents for their patience."
