Historical department store to close after 135 years
GoogleA department store has announced it has made the decision to close after 135 years due to "growing economic and social pressures".
Barsleys in Paddock Wood, Kent, made the announcement on Thursday and said it would be temporarily closed while it prepared for a closing down sale which was expected to start on 15 May.
"Retail has changed greatly over the years, and despite our best efforts to adapt to recent challenges, the growing economic and social pressures mean we are no longer able to continue," a spokesperson said.
They thanked customers for their "loyalty, support, and the many memories shared".
"Serving you and our community over so many generations has been an extraordinary honour," the spokesperson added.
The business says it understands the news "may come as a shock" to its customers.
"Our store has been more than a place of business, it has been part of our shared history, and it is not easy to say goodbye," it added.
The family business started in 1891 when Charles Barsley took over a tailoring shop in Brenchley before buying the current site in Commercial Road in Paddock Wood in 1903.
In 1919, the Brenchley branch was closed and all efforts were focussed on the Paddock Wood store.
The department store has been contacted for more information.
