Castle wins England tourist board's gold award

Lincoln Castle staff said they were "absolutely thrilled" after the landmark was named one of the best visitor attractions in the country.

The castle received Visit England's Gold Award, receiving praise for its "thought-provoking historic displays" and the "enthusiasm and commitment" of staff.

Culture services manager Kim Vickers said: "This is one of the highest recognitions an attraction can receive, and it's really down to the hard work and passion of everyone here on site."

Meanwhile, Lincoln Guildhall was recognised in the Best Told Story (Tour) category and Mrs Smith's Cottage in Navenby was celebrated as a Hidden Gem.

Visit England is the official national tourist board for England, sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Awards are handed out based on excellent reviews and a visit from an independent assessor, who concluded: "This was a memorable and enjoyable assessment visit to a well-run historic attraction."

Lincolnshire County Council said the 11th-Century stronghold also received the Travellers' Choice Award from travel website Tripadvisor earlier this year.

Executive councillor for culture Natalie Oliver said: "Receiving Visit England's coveted Gold accolade is a fantastic achievement and its timing, coming hot on the heels of the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award, makes it even more special."
