A number of major roads in the Peak District are being shut by ahead of Storm Goretti's forecast high winds and heavy snow.

With a Met Office amber warning in force in Derbyshire, the county council said some of the county's highest roads would be closed to traffic from 18:00 GMT on Thursday.

These include the A57 Snake Pass, from the junction with the A6013 to Glossop, the A54/A537 Cat and Fiddle - from the junction with Leek Road, Buxton to the county boundary - and the A6024 Holme Moss, from the junction with the A628 to the county boundary.

In addition, the A628 Woodhead Pass is being closed by from 20:00, while the Hope Valley Line is among branch railways being shut for safety reasons.

The council will also be closing the A53 Axe Edge, from the junction with Grin Low Road, Buxton to the county boundary, and the A5004, Long Hill, from the Horwich End traffic lights at Whaley Bridge to the A53 St John's Road, Buxton.

It previously said the A5012 Via Gellia Road would also be closed during Storm Goretti due to unstable trees along the stretch.

A Derbyshire County Council spokesperson said: "This is not a decision we have taken lightly, and is based on public safety.

"Heavy snow is forecast so please do not travel unless your journey is essential."
