Family business to close after 34 years

A family business in a Devon market town said it had taken the "extremely difficult decision" to close its doors there after 34 years.

Lawsons, which opened in Tavistock in 1992 selling home goods, kitchenware, garden and hardware and will shut at the end of February 2026.

In a statement, managing director Liz Lawson said the decision was not made lightly.

The building at 1 Parkwood Road has been sold to a "like-minded family business", Julian Foye the Furnishers of Cornwall, which Ms Lawson said would "thrive" in Tavistock.

Ms Lawson said: "Over the decades, the shop has become more than just a business; it has been a gathering place, a trusted resource, and a part of countless local stories and milestones.

"It has been an immense privilege to be part of the Tavistock community for the last 34 years.

"The most painful aspect of this is losing our close colleagues, I could not be more grateful to the Tavistock team both past and present; they are the beating heart of this shop.

"Their dedication, warmth, and hard work are the reason we've had the privilege of staying open for 34 years.

"I cannot thank them enough for their commitment and passion."

She said the business had been on the market for two years and she had not found someone suitable to continue the business as a going concern.

The building at 1 Parkwood Road will be taken on by Julian Foye the Furnishers of Cornwall.

"This will be Julian Foye's first showroom in Devon where they hope, after a period of refurbishment, to open the doors and extend a warm welcome to their customers, old and new, in Devon," Ms Lawson said.

Lawsons was established in 1904 and its stores in Ivybridge and Totnes remained open and trading alongside its online shop.

Ms Lawson added: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our loyal customers, we would not have been the success we are without your support, it has meant everything and we will miss you all."

She said she was unable to retire or resign, so closing the business was the best option.
