East Riding of Yorkshire Council said it wants Hessle Square to be a "vibrant, accessible space"

A town square in East Yorkshire could be redeveloped to include a park and plaza area for public events and markets.

A consultation is to be held to help shape future plans and funding for Hessle Square, East Riding of Yorkshire Council said.

Other changes would include extra seating, plants and sheltered areas, alongside safer pedestrian routes and improved accessibility.

"Public art, better lighting and measures to reduce anti-social behaviour would help create a vibrant, inclusive destination," the council added.

The authority is running an online consultation in conjunction with Hessle Town Council, which closes on 9 January.

There will also be drop in sessions which will be announced on the council's social media pages.

The council said the concept would focus on improving walking connections and ensure the area is a "vibrant, accessible space at the heart of the community".

Council leader Anne Handley said: "We're proud to support communities across the region, including in Hessle.

"We encourage residents to take part in the survey and let us know their thoughts about the future of Hessle Square."

In October, a £700,000 project started in Hessle to repave and install new seating in one of its main shopping streets.
