Plans have been lodged to build a block of more than 40 flats on the edge of Leicester city centre.

Nest Properties Ltd has submitted a planning application to Leicester City Council to knock down buildings between 169-177 Walnut Steet and replace them with a five-storey property.

According to planning documents the proposed development would consist of 31 one-bed flats and 11 two-bed flats plus office space on the ground floor.

A report submitted by developers said the proposed development would make a "strong contribution" to the character of the area.

Plans said the site consists of a vehicle maintenance garage and a private car park.

The report said: "The proposal makes strong and effective endeavours to successfully respond to the local character and identity of the area, while significantly enhancing the site's contribution to its setting, vastly improving an underused site and resolving what is currently a fragmented end to the block."

The council's website says the authority has set a target decision date of 11 June.
