Metro anti-social behaviour alert number changes
NexusA new system is in place for Metro passengers to report anti-social behaviour.
The Tyne and Wear Metro has switched its alert system to WhatsApp in the hope of it being easier for customers to use, although SMS text messages will still be available for those without the app.
The new number is 07345 222 710, replacing the current 66777 alert.
Operator Nexus said using WhatsApp removed network charges and allowed people to send photos and videos to support their report at no extra charge.
Since the alert system launched in August 2023, the control room at the South Gosforth depot has received more than 2,500 reports.
The most common report has been anti-social behaviour, ranging from graffiti to rowdy behaviour and people holding doors open.
Cathy Massarella, managing director at Nexus, described it as a "vital tool for customers to make direct and discreet contact" with the operator.
The "Report It" function on the Pop App will also allow customers to make reports in the same way.
Nexus said WhatsApp would make it simpler for customers to directly raise a report to Metro staff, as the messages will not need to include the wording "REPORTIT" before being sent.
However, Nexus reminded customers in an emergency people should still call 999 or 101 for a non-emergency, if police are required to attend straight away.
