A paedophile who raped and sexually assaulted a young girl has been jailed for more than 13 years.

Joshua Rothery, from Bradford, committed the offences last year, with his crimes reported to police in August, the city's crown court heard.

Rothery, 33, of Dawnay Road, pleaded guilty to raping a child under 13, assaulting a child under 13 by touching and making indecent images at a court hearing in November and was sentenced on Monday.

Speaking after he was jailed, PC Tarah Sumner from West Yorkshire Police said: "This is a truly horrific case in which Rothery took advantage of a child and committed serious sexual offences against them."

She added: "I am pleased he will serve a substantial amount of time behind bars and hope the sentence can go some way in enabling the victim and their family to start to move forward with their lives."

As well as being jailed for 13 years and eight months, he was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will be on the sex offenders register for life.
