The virtual births that could save lives

Access to excellent neonatal care has led to fewer babies and mothers dying. Virtual reality could be one way to cut down deaths even further.

Most developed countries now have very low maternal and neonatal death rates. But despite the level of care, deaths still sometimes occur.

For the first time in the UK, midwifery students are now being trained to deal with obstetric emergencies using Microsoft’s HoloLens technology.

The students are shown virtual reality images of what could be happening within the womb, an experience that should help them deal with any real-life emergencies.
