Singer Khalid has used Twitter to claim he was sexually assaulted by a fan.

"I go to talk to a fan and she grabs my ass, how (sic) old are we??? Spoke about it because it can happen to anybody!"

The teenager posted the messages hours after performing at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles.

"I love interacting and talking to fans but I also love respecting others so don't disrespect me when I'm being nice," he continued.

The 19-year-old called the incident "unacceptable" but said it wouldn't stop him getting close to fans in the future.

Khalid, who released his debut album Teenage Dreams earlier this year, is best known for the song, Young Dumb & Broke.

Following his original post the singer received messages of support from fans as well as praise for openly speaking out about what happened.

Khalid is the second musician in a week to speak out about inappropriate behaviour.

Last week Drake stopped one of his performances to call out a fan he claims was inappropriately touching another fan during his show.

The rapper was in the middle of a set at a club in Sydney when he pointed into the audience and shouted at the man.

He said he would "come down" and sort him out if he didn't stop putting his hands on girls.
