Flooding strikes after overnight rain

Southern Scotland has been badly affected by flooding after heavy overnight rain.

In the Borders, Hawick and Jedburgh suffered major problems with parts of Peeblesshire also affected.

The River Teviot and the Jed Water both spilled over their banks and some school transport was cancelled.

The Whitesands area of Dumfries suffered partial flooding with many local businesses affected.

The A68 was closed for a time in Jedburgh and there were problems reported on some of the alternative routes in the area as well.

In neighbouring Dumfries and Galloway car parks were again closed due to a flood warning for the Whitesands area.

The River Nith later burst its banks and parts of Dumfries were flooded.

A landslip at Kirkconnel prevented trains running on the Glasgow to Carlisle via Kilmarnock line for a time but the blockage was later cleared.

The A76 road between Dumfries and Kilmarnock was also blocked at Kirkconnel but has since reopened.

Scottish Borders Council said a number of roads were closed because of flooding and fallen trees.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has flood warnings in place in many parts of the country but most river levels are not starting to fall.
