Sheffield on-street electric car charging trial to be discussed

Plans to install 11 on-street electric vehicle charging points as part of a city-wide pilot project are to be considered in Sheffield.

The council proposals, to be discussed later, are aimed at areas where residents do not have private off-street parking.

If approved, the installations would be used by the authority to learn lessons ahead of a wider roll-out.

A councillor said electric vehicles could be a "game changer" for the city.

Ben Miskell, chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, said electric cars could reduce pollution and protect residents from "dirty air".

"By increasing Sheffield's charging point provision, we hope to reduce some of the obstacles residents face when considering upgrading to a cleaner vehicle, such as access to chargers close to home," he added.

The project has received funding from the government's Office for Zero Emission Vehicles.

Residents at the six on-street locations will receive a letter about the project including how to raise any queries, the council said.

A Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) will see existing bays in a number of residential car parks designated for electric vehicle-only parking.

The TRO will be advertised on the council website, offering the opportunity for residents to raise any formal objections.
