Police are investigating a suspected hit-and-run crash after a man's body was found near GCHQ in Cheltenham.

Officers are appealing for information after finding the body on the A40 in the Benhall area at about 02:00 BST.

A 62-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released under investigation.

Gloucestershire Constabulary has closed the road outside the government listening post, and in the local area, as part of the investigation.

Diversions will remain in place while inquiries are ongoing and the body is recovered.

Ch Insp Alistair Barby said the identity of the dead man remains unknown, and described him as "a white male, aged approximately 35 to early 40s".

He said he was unshaven with wavy, dark brown hair, and wearing a white checked shirt and green corded trousers.

"We understand this caused a lot of disruption to road users this morning and while we are working to reopen the road at the earliest opportunity I hope people understand this is painstaking work and cannot be rushed," Ch Insp Barby said.

"In the meantime, can I appeal to anyone who was travelling on the A40 around the time of the incident and may have seen something relevant to call straight away."
