Closure of centre damaged by storm continues
Cumberland CouncilA leisure venue is to remain closed after Storm Éowyn damaged its temporary roof.
Cumberland Council said repairs are continuing on the canopy of The Sands Centre, Carlisle, following high winds on 24 January.
It has apologised for the closure but said it was to "ensure the safety of the public".
No date has been given for when it will reopen but the council said it would let people know "as soon as we can".
The events space at the centre was closed in 2023 following the government's change in guidance over the use of Raac, a type of concrete with safety risks, although the pool and gym remained open.
The temporary canopy which was damaged during Storm Éowyn had been put in place while the auditorium roof was replaced.
Cumberland CouncilGLL, the council's events and leisure provider, said members could use alternative facilities at Better Leisure Centres across Cumbria at no extra cost.
The Sheepmount Athletics Stadium has extended its opening hours to run from 08:00 to 19:00 GMT so members can use the gym and running track.
A reduced exercise class timetable is available at the former St John Henry Newman Catholic School in Lismore Place, alongside a limited gymnastics programme.
Patients who access NHS services at the centre are being contacted by NHS Direct.
A Cumberland Council spokesperson said: "By keeping the centre closed, large machinery can move around the site more easily.
"Work to assess the damage to the canopy and remove steel work continues and we are making good progress.
"We will provide updates on the reopening of The Sands Centre and car parks as soon as we can.
