Terrance Hannefin injured two police officers while fleeing the scene in a stolen car

A man who drove over a police officer's foot while fleeing the scene of the crime in a stolen car has been jailed.

Terrance Hannefin stole a car in Wroxall Drive, Coventry, on 4 January and was spotted a short distance away in Alex Grierson Close in the driver's seat.

When officers approached him, Hannefin reversed out, dragging them with him and driving over one officer's foot - another officer received minor injuries and both required hospital treatment.

Hannefin, 36, pleaded guilty to theft of a motor vehicle, theft from a shop, two assaults on police officers, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance, and was jailed for 16 weeks at Coventry Magistrates' Court.

West Midlands Police dubbed him a "prolific car thief" and said Hannefin had been identified from the bodyworn footage, leading to his arrest at home on the same day as the incident.

The stolen car was found and recovered after Hannefin abandoned it in a nearby street.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Car thieves are often on the lookout on cold days for cars being left running on driveways.

"Remember to always remain with your vehicle and never to leave it unlocked while you aren't nearby."
