Increase in number of December drink-drive arrests
PA MediaPolice have reported an increase in the number of drivers arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
Guernsey Police said officers stopped 576 vehicles as part of Operation Bauble, its Christmas drink-drive campaign in the island.
Of these, 13 drivers were arrested on suspicion of drink driving - a "significant increase" on December 2024, when 256 vehicles were stopped, and six arrests were made, police said.
It said the highest custody reading recorded this year was more than three times the legal limit.
A spokesman said random stop checks were carried out across the island last month, designed to deter drink driving and protect all road users.
They said although the festivities were over, the checks would continue.
"There is never a safe time to drive while under the influence. Drink driving is unacceptable, dangerous, and puts lives at risk," they said.
"It can lead to devastating accidents and irreversible consequences. All of this is avoidable by making sensible choices - plan ahead, arrange a designated driver, or book a safe route home.
"Although the Christmas campaign has concluded, our commitment continues. Officers will remain vigilant throughout the year, ensuring drink drivers are caught and brought before the courts.
"Our message is clear: don't drink and drive. Don't put lives at risk. Some decisions can never be reversed."
