Leslie Smith was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court

A paedophile who abused six children over a period of two decades has been jailed for 34 years.

Leslie Smith, 70, was found guilty of 17 counts of rape and 14 counts of indecent assault in Oldham, Greater Manchester, following a trial last August.

Smith, from Middleton, subjected his victims to daily abuse and his then-wife Lynda Smith was also charged with sexual offences but died before going on trial.

He was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on Monday.

Afterwards, senior investigating officer Clare Harrison, of Greater Manchester Police, said Smith's survivors showed "extraordinary bravery".

"The strength they have shown in coming forwards against this individual is remarkable," she said.

"This marks the final moment that this depraved individual will hold any power over their lives."

Smith was charged in 2023 alongside his then-wife, who died of natural causes at the age 61 before her case was concluded, police said.

'Life in prison'

Det Insp Harrison said: "The scale and severity of the abuse is unimaginable, leaving a lasting impact on those who have heard the evidence.

"As harrowing as the evidence is to listen to, it represents only a glimpse into the unimaginable and far-reaching consequences endured by the survivors.

"Despite the profound trauma inflicted by this man the survivors have shown immense courage, determination and resilience throughout the investigation and trial.

"Their compelling evidence and powerful testimonies in court were pivotal in ensuring that some measure of justice could be served, ensuring that he will likely serve the rest of his life in prison."

She added: "Lastly, to anyone who has experienced or continues to experience sexual abuse, please know that you are not alone and that we are here for you.

"If you are not ready to speak with the police, there are other confidential services available for you to reach out to."
