A major route into Birmingham was shut for most of the afternoon because of problems with overhead gantries, West Midlands Roads (WMR) said.

The A38(M) Aston Expressway closed late on Monday morning with no access to the entire road from any entry point, the body - part of Transport for West Midlands - posted on X.

The closure affected Spaghetti Junction, Gravelly Hill, Park Circus and Dartmouth Circus. WMR warned drivers to expect delays and advised them to use Lichfield Road instead.

The route reopened fully at about 16:00 GMT, although the carriageway into the city temporarily reopened two hours earlier to relieve pressure on the motorway network.

Earlier this month, the Expressway was also shut in both directions, between Park Circus and Dartmouth Circus, with National Highways citing a technical fault at the time.
