A car park in the centre of Huddersfield has closed for six months to allow for refurbishment work to be completed.

Work to Upperhead Row Car Park, which is situated above the town's bus station, will include improvements to lifts, stairwells and fire exits.

Kirklees Council said alternative parking is available at Springwood, Cambridge Road and Albion Street.

The council said it would also feature clearer signage, enhanced CCTV and improved fire and emergency lighting after reopening in summer.

Work already completed included an increase in the number of accessible spaces, from 11 to 23.

Parking bays have also been made wider to fit modern vehicles, though this has meant a reduction in the number of spaces by 71, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Councillor Moses Crook, the council's deputy leader, said: "This investment means safer, more modern parking at one of Huddersfield's busiest car parks.

"It will make a real difference to everyone who uses it and strengthens the wider parking offer across the town."
