Holidaymakers are being encouraged to donate their unwanted inflatables when they return to Luton Airport

Holidaymakers will be able to pick up free airbeds and other inflatables before they fly as part of an airport's new recycling scheme.

London Luton Airport (LLA) has launched the "Lilo Exchange" to encourage the items to be reused and keep them out of landfill.

Returning holidaymakers are being encouraged to drop off the unwanted items when they land at the airport for the use of people about to depart.

Clare Armstrong, head of guest experience, said the aim was to "provide a fun way to encourage people to travel more responsibly by bringing back unwanted inflatables, so that other holidaymakers jetting off from LLA can do the same".

The airport's research found many inflatables were abandoned in holiday destinations every summer

Each summer, holidaymakers leave millions of tonnes of plastic waste at their destinations, with inflatables one of the most frequently discarded items.

Research commissioned by the airport found that in the past year, more than half (51%) of holidaymakers have purchased a new inflatable to take on holiday.

However, many never make it home, as they are ditched after just eight days, on average.

The survey found the reasons for this included limited suitcase space, punctures, a lack of opportunity to use at home and the chore of deflating.

The scheme, to include everything from lilos and rubber rings and inflatable dolphins or crocodiles, will run until 14 August.

Returning holidaymakers are being offered a free fast-track security pass for their next journey as an incentive to donate their unwanted inflatables.

Ms Armstrong said it was "a fun and environmentally responsible way to highlight our simple and friendly passenger experience".
