The current boardwalk stretches along the River Kennet

A fundraiser has been launched to preserve the future of a boardwalk at a popular walking area.

Action for the River Kennet (ARK) said the wooden structure at the Stonebridge Wild River Reserve in Marlborough, Wiltshire has reached the end of its life.

The charity, which manages the site, hope to raise £44,000 to replace it with a new, more accessible boardwalk.

Anna Forbes, from ARK, described the current structure as "uneven", "falling apart" and "not fit for purpose".

"The wood is now rotten, we've had to remove sections," she said.

"We'd really like to replace it with a new one to keep that amenity going."

The boardwalk borders the banks of Kennet and gives people the chance to spot wildlife such as kingfisher, water vole and brown trout.

It is also a popular spot for visits by local school groups and carers bringing clients from a nearby retirement home.

If enough funds are raised, the new bridge would be made from recycled plastic materials

If enough funds are raised, the new boardwalk would be made from recycled plastic materials, with non-slip surfaces and large beams to secure the wooden path in place.

Forbes added: "We've used that material [non-slip surfaces] on the opposite side of the river on the water meadow. We know it's really good and will last really well.

"We'll also be improving it for use by people with pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters, with bigger turning points and jetties which would look out to really nice views of the River Kennet.

ARK volunteers hope to hold a community celebration by the river if the boardwalk fundraiser reaches its target.
