A road was closed and people moved out of neighbouring properties after the front of a building collapsed in Cheshire.

Firefighters were sent to Gatefield Street, Crewe, shortly before 15:00 GMT on Tuesday.

A safety cordon was in place, everyone was safely accounted for and gas and electricity had been isolated, said Cheshire Fire and Rescue service.

Crews remained at the scene until 16:30 to keep the area safe, the service added.

"Poor things, it just looks dreadful, the whole of the front has just sort of collapsed," said Sarah, who is involved in a dementia support group nearby.

"I'm so sorry, because that must be a complete nightmare, and of course all the roads around have to be closed..it can't be helped, and I do feel for them."
