Several houses in a rural North Yorkshire village were evacuated after a fire broke out in one home and spread to neighbouring properties.

Five crews were called to Briar Hill in Danby, around 16 miles (26km) west of Whitby, at around 20:50 GMT on Monday evening.

Emergency services relocated residents to a place of safety while the fire was extinguished, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said, while the electricity supply to the affected property was cut off.

A spokesperson said that an investigation to determine the cause of the fire was due to take place on Tuesday morning.

Police said no injuries were reported.

Located in the North York Moors National Park, Danby is popular with tourists and has a population of just over 1,200 people, according to the 2021 census.
