Zoo launches appeal after aviaries collapse in storm
Twycross ZooA zoo has launched an appeal to raise funds to look after birds during rebuilding work after two aviaries collapsed during a storm.
Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire said "extreme winds and snowfall" during Storm Goretti on 8 January resulted in the collapse of two aviaries, impacting bird species including finches, cranes, speckled pigeons and hamerkop.
It said the birds were "quickly secured" following the collapse but there were "immediate and ongoing" welfare costs to caring for the birds while their new homes were built.
Senior curator Lynsey Bugg said donations would go "directly towards" supporting the birds.
Storm Goretti brought strong winds to parts of the UK, with the East Midlands seeing snowy conditions.
Bugg said: "Our absolute priority has been the welfare of the birds. Our teams acted quickly to make sure they were safe, warm and well cared for following the storm.
"While insurance will help us rebuild, there are vital care costs during this period that aren't fully covered.
"We're asking for support to help us look after the birds while we rebuild their new homes."
