Teen fatally stabbed man because he was 'scared', court told
Family PhotoOne of the two teenagers accused of murdering a 38-year-old father in an unprovoked attack "did not mean to kill him" and only used a knife because he was "scared," a court has heard.
Kamran Rasool Aman died of a single stab wound to the heart in the early hours of 1 July in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan.
Two boys, aged 16 and 17, from Llantwit Major, have admitted manslaughter but both deny murder.
Cardiff Crown Court was told the 17-year-old, who cannot be identified because of his age, had "lost his head" after drinking excessively and smoking cannabis on a daily basis following his grandmother's death earlier the same month.
The jury heard how, on the evening of 30 June, the two teenagers had been at a house close to Mr Aman's family home in Barry Road, where he had been delivering groceries to his mother.
Having noticed him in the street, the pair are alleged to have left the house and gone outside in a drunken rage, where they attacked and racially abused Mr Aman, the court heard.
However, when Mr Aman tried to defend himself against the younger of the pair, the older boy went back inside the house, grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Mr Aman - moments which were captured on CCTV and were shown to the court earlier in the trial.
Dr Kurt Armstrong, a clinical psychologist, who assessed the 17-year-old in October, said the teen had professed to seeing his friend "becoming increasingly bloody and hurt", adding he had "just wanted to warn [Mr Aman] off."
Dr Armstrong said the boy, who is a father himself, has a very low IQ, a diagnosis of ADHD and has had no contact with his father and little with his mother since childhood.
Having spent time in foster care, he ended up living with a grandparent who "was more like a mother to him".
In a separate interview, the 17-year-old told a psychiatrist he had only used a knife against Mr Aman because he was afraid.
"I was scared and I stabbed him - I didn't mean to kill him," he said.
The trial continues.
