A major project to carry out "urgent" pitch repairs at Scarborough Sports Village has started.

The 3G pitch is home to Scarborough Athletic FC and Scarborough Ladies FC and was due to be resurfaced last year, but this was delayed after unexpected structural issues were discovered.

The pitch is unavailable for competitive fixtures for the 2025/26 season during the repairs, with the project expected to be finished in time for the 2026/27 season.

North Yorkshire Council said work to remove the playing surface by contractors began last week.

Councillor Simon Myers, the council's executive member for culture, leisure and housing, said: "We are absolutely committed to ensuring that the pitch is repaired to an excellent standard, and that it is done so as swiftly as possible to minimise the impact on everyone.

"I look forward to seeing the progress over the coming weeks and months."

After discovering the pitch's structural issues, the council received a petition calling for it to be repaired which received more than 3,300 signatures.

Scarborough Athletic are playing their home fixtures at Bridlington Town's ground as a temporary solution while repairs are carried out.
