A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car crashed into railings in Hastings, leaving a passenger with serious injuries.

The car hit railings in St Helen's Road just before 00:30 GMT, when police were called to the scene.

The passenger, a 22-year-old local woman, was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, while the driver fled the scene, officers said.

A 23-year-old man, also from the local area, was arrested at a nearby property and is in police custody, Sussex Police said. Anyone who saw what happened, or has any mobile, dashcam or CCTV footage, is asked to contact the force.
