The Shambles Sweet Shop in York reportedly had about 70kg (154lb) of sweets stolen

Two women have been arrested on suspicion of burglary after more than 70kg (154lb) of sweets were stolen from a shop window display.

The Shambles Sweet Shop in York was broken into in the early hours of Monday, police said, with its window panes smashed and shelves removed.

North Yorkshire Police said the women, both in their 40s, were arrested in connection with the incident shortly after 12:00 GMT and remained in custody.

Shop owner Adam Scott said that although he hoped to reopen soon, trade was looking "pretty terrible" for the week until the windows could be fixed.

He said there were some "quite random things" on display in the window and he found it "hard to understand" why anyone would break into the shop to steal them.

Police said the incident had been reported to them by a member of the public just before 05:00.

"We launched an investigation this morning which included specialist forensic examination at the shop," a police spokesperson said.

Officers have since recovered and returned most of the stolen property to the owner of the store, they added.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact police.
