More than half of respondents feel positive about how their own organisations will perform over the next year

Jersey business leaders say they feel confident about their own futures but unsure about the island's wider economy, according to a new survey released ahead of this year's elections.

The latest Institute of Directors (IoD) Jersey poll, carried out between 20 November and 11 December, suggests more than half of respondents feel positive about how their own organisations will perform over the next year.

It suggested 17% felt optimistic about Jersey's economy, while 63% expected things to get worse.

The BBC has contacted the Government of Jersey for comment.

Firms said the biggest issues holding them back were weak economic conditions, rising cost of labour, the difficulty of finding skilled staff, and red tape.

Uncertainty over government investment plans also continued to cause frustration, the survey suggested.

The IoD said the findings showed how urgently the next government should act to rebuild trust and steady the economy.

'Persistent pessimism'

Alex Ruddy, from the IoD, said: "The results of our third survey highlight a clear confidence gap between the outlook for individual businesses and the wider Jersey economy.

"While many organisations remain resilient, the persistent pessimism about the broader economic environment is a warning sign.

"Ahead of the 2026 elections, we urge policymakers to prioritise fiscal discipline, provide certainty on investment plans, and reduce regulatory burdens.

"Jersey's future competitiveness depends on decisive action now. IoD Jersey will continue to engage with government and stakeholders to ensure that the voice of business is heard in shaping the island's economic future."
