Fans plan town centre mural to celebrate club
David PlattPlans to celebrate a football club with artwork in the town centre are being backed by the local MP, who describes himself as a massive football fan.
A consultation on what should be on a Crewe Alexandra mural or murals, and where they should be, is running until January 2026.
There have already been 120 responses, said David Platt from the Railwaymen Supporters Society which is gathering people's views on an idea from the host of club podcast The Railwaymen.
Crewe's Labour MP Connor Naismith said the artwork would physically bridge the gap between the Gresty Road stadium and the town centre.
David Platt"For many people, their football team is a central part of their identity, and the town's identity, so this is just about reflecting that in Crewe", said Mr Naismith, who said he knew how important the club was to many constituents.
The aim of the consultation is to demonstrate community support for the idea, and then look for funding to pay for an artist to produce it.
"We want to get moving on this as soon as we can," stated the MP, who added they may look for crowd funding to make it happen.
David PlattDavid Platt, who is secretary of the Railwaymen Supporters Society and a board member at Crewe Alexandra, said it would be difficult to decide what to put on the artwork.
But former players Danny Murphy, Dean Ashton and Steve Jones should be on it, he said.
There is already Crewe Alexandra-themed artwork at the Gresty Road stadium, which around 120 children were involved in producing.
The five-day project in June 2024 saw children from ten local schools work with two street artists.
