Peaceful protest after claims hotel 'at risk'

More than 100 people formed a demonstration of "solidarity" on the outskirts of Norwich after claims of a planned far right protest.

Labour Norwich South MP Clive Lewis spoke at the rally near a hotel housing asylum seekers on Wednesdsay evening.

It took place as mass counter-demonstrations were held in towns and cities in response to disorder across the country.

Norfolk Police, which had officers at the scene, said there were a number of peaceful protesters, no reports of disorder or arrests and no far-right protesters.

Writing on on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Lewis announced he would be attending the protest and said the area had been "at possible risk from a mob of racists".

Demonstrators congregated on a verge and held up banners, flags and Stand Up to Racism signs saying "Say it loud, say it clear: Refugees welcome here".
