Cash lifeline handed to youth music project
Project MA £10,000 grant has been given to a youth music project that aims to divert them away from anti-social behaviour and improve their mental health.
Project M was set up by charity The Core at Corby Cube in 2022 for anyone aged 12-18 and gives them access to teachers and equipment during music sessions.
The money has come from the Northamptonshire police, fire and crime commissioner's (PFCC) Safe and Sound Communities Fund.
Dan Pickard, who is centre director for Willow Place and Corby Town Centre shopping areas, said the money had given the group a "lifeline" to continue its work.
The free sessions offer young people the chance to learn how to sing, play instruments, write, produce and perform music, with the help of professionals.
Pastoral carers are also on site to help with young people's wellbeing.
Project MJoe Flavin, director of The Core at Corby Cube, said he set up the project to try diverting young people from anti-social behaviour in the town centre.
"Whilst some of them might have initially presented with challenging behaviours, we have been delighted to see how the project has brought the best out of them and helped to steer them on to a more positive pathway towards adulthood," said Flavin.
Pickard, who arranged for the vacant unit for Project M to use in Willow Place Shopping Centre, pointed out that some of the charity's funding was withdrawn last year.
Labour PFCC Danielle Stone said: "The money will ensure that this fantastic project can keep providing a positive, creative space."
It "gives young people a purpose and direction and keeps them off of the streets", she added.
