A man in his 30s is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after he sustained head and facial injuries in a serious assault in Omagh, County Tyrone.

A police patrol came across the injured victim on Main Street in the town at about 01:00 GMT on Sunday, according to Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Det Sgt Johnston.

The officer said while he was being spoken to, his condition "rapidly deteriorated" and police at the scene carried out CPR on him before taking him to hospital.

An 18-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.

Witnesses tried to stop assault

Police originally believed that assault may have occurred "in the gated Main Street area" but after reviewing CCTV, they now believe it may have happened on Market Street, just outside the gated Main Street area.

"We would appeal to anyone who may have come to the aid of the injured man to come forward," said Det Sgt Johnston.

"We know a number of people attempted to stop the assault, and provided first aid.

"We would be keen to speak to them, as we progress our investigation."

Officers have also appealed to anyone who has CCTV/dash-cam or other video footage which could assist their enquiries, to contact them.

The arrested teenager remains in custody.
