A bus has crashed into a 150-year-old park gate feature in Liverpool, damaging the structure.

The Arriva service hit a pillar of the gate, which dates back to the 1870s, at the entrance to the city's Sefton Park at the junction of Aigburth Drive and Mossley Hill Drive just after 06:00 GMT on Tuesday.

The bus was out of service at the time and there were no passengers onboard, Merseyside Police said.

Liverpool City Council said the pillar would be replaced as soon as possible and the cost of the replacement met through insurance.

Arriva said the company was investigating the circumstances, and there were no reports of any injuries.

Sefton Park councillor Katie Jarman said she would be checking with the council whether recent ice and snow played a part and if the roads were adequately gritted.
